Powerful Techniques to Help You Write an Inspiring Vision and Mission Statement

When you’re setting up your website, you might just think of your vision and mission statement as unimportant. Yes, you need to put it on your website, possibly under the “about us” tab but you don’t think people are really going to read it. You assume that they’ll just go to the tabs that give them the information they want, such as the types of products or services you provide. Visions and missions aren’t necessarily considered that important by the majority of people who just want to get their work done.

However, if you assume all this, you’re probably wrong. A lot of people do want to know more about the company they’re buying a product or service from. They like to get to know who you are before they spend their money on what you’re selling. They want to be sure that your mindset is a lot like their mindset, or at least that the two of you have something in common. If you want to convince them that this is true, try following these tips in order to write an inspiring vision and mission statement:

Write It Yourself

Maybe you’re not a writer. You’re just good at running a business. However, when it comes down to stringing words together to make a sentence or stringing sentences together to make a paragraph, you feel inexplicably blocked. That’s ok. We’re not suggesting that you have to do all the work yourself. You just need to be involved in the process.

If you can, then jot down a few things that you think will be important for the vision statement. If you really have a hard time writing, you can sit down with someone who can take what you’re saying and convert it into readable text. You can do this with your assistant or someone from your marketing firm.

The point is that you know your company best because you’re running it. You may even have built it from the ground up. So why would you let someone else dictate its vision or mission statement? Make sure that the statement that goes on your website corresponds to what you really think about your company. Make sure that it covers all the things that are important to you.

Figuring Out What Matters

You may not actually have any idea what your vision or mission is. Maybe you never stopped to think about it consciously. You just started building the company and growing it. Maybe you’re one of those people who works by instinct. So when it comes to actually vocalizing what matters to you and your company, you’re not sure what to say or write. There are a few ways to get around this.

  • The Best Friend Technique: One very powerful technique is to pretend that you’re speaking to your best friend. This could be a friend, a spouse or anyone else you trust. It’s someone who understands you. Sometimes, when you just pretend you’re talking, you don’t censor yourself the way you do when you’re writing. Later on, you (or someone else you’re working with) can go through what you’ve written and retrieve the main points.
  • Jotting Down Random Ideas: Another great technique is to write down the things that come to you randomly. You can either carry a small notebook around or message yourself on your phone whenever you remember anything. Later on, you can compile your texts together.
  • Answering Questions: Try to answer these questions: Why did you start your company? What’s different about your company and product? What do you pride yourself on? Where do you see yourself going in the next five or ten years? What need of the consumer are you trying to fulfill? While answering these questions, you’re sure to understand your vision better, at least in verbal terms.
